#IWD2024

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women worldwide, and we’re thrilled to share an exciting event that took place within our organization last year. Our first female Country Director, Sara Juko, began leading our dedicated Uganda team as they provide vital mental health programming for people affected by war or conflict. We took a moment to ask Sara about what IWD means to her, “Today, we reflect on our contributions and appreciate our efforts worldwide. As women, we use a lot of energy to break through barriers that want to hold us back. I have fought against these barriers in my career, as well as when I was growing up.

We need to recognize the value of every individual - regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or background to ensure everyone has a seat at the table in their homes, community, or workplace.”

In a world where gender equality remains a pressing issue, Sara’s appointment is not just a step forward, it's a leap toward empowerment and inclusivity. As the Uganda Country Director, Sara brings with her a wealth of experience, passion, and a profound commitment to making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

She continued, “Let’s inspiration and support other women! As a mother, wife, sister, and colleague, it is my pledge to help support my daughter, Ella, my sisters, and fellow female co-workers to pursue their dreams and aspirations without fear or prejudice. My hope is that all women overlook the existing challenges and are free to exercise their rights and freedoms without restrictions.”

Under Sara’s leadership, our team continues to provide essential mental health support to refugees, who often face unimaginable challenges and trauma. Through innovative programs and compassionate care, Tutapona staff strive to empower individuals to heal, rebuild, and thrive.

“Women are leaders, innovators, caregivers, activists, and so much more. By highlighting women around the world, it helps strengthen their efforts. It is like saying, ‘Hey sister, I’ve got your back!’ It is a form of appreciation and recognition of what women can do. It is important to use this day to acknowledge true inclusion, and to amplify marginalized voices. Let's mentor, support, and uplift each other. Let's inspire inclusion in everything we do - not just today, but every day.”

As we honor the achievements of women everywhere, let us also recognize the transformative impact of female leadership in creating positive change! Together, let's champion equality, celebrate diversity, and empower women to reach their fullest potential. Happy International Women's Day!
